In just the program’s third varsity football game, Mount Carmel posted a 40-22 victory over MATHS Charter School of Baltimore on Saturday.

In the fifty-year history of the school, there had never been a football program until this season.  The Cougars dropped their two games but broke into the win column this year.

Senior all-purpose player Gabriel Yuille powered Mount Carmel’s efforts, scoring at least one touchdown on offense, defense and special teams.

Yuille returned a fumble 63 yards for a score in the second quarter to push the Cougars’ lead to 14-0.  He followed that up with back-to-back scores, one on a 30-yard interception return and the other on a 65-yard strike from quarterback Malachy Onwudiegu (one rushing touchdown).

He completed the trifecta with a 76-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

The Cougars got on the board in the first quarter after sophomore Corey Brown’s 2-yard plunge into the end zone before an enthusiastic homecoming crowd at Eastern Regional Park.

After the win, Yuille teamed up with fellow team captain Ian Arciaga to give head coach Robb Johnson a victory bath.

“The hard work for the young men finally paid off,” said Johnson. “Now they know what winning a football game feels like and I know many more will come.  This is the best group of young men I’ve ever coached.”

He added:  “All 30 are coachable, compete hard and are resilient.  That is why I love them so much.  They fully understand now, the difference I tell them between thinking they can win and knowing they can win.  It’s a mindset that they know they can win, if they continue playing hard for 48 minutes.”

The Cougars next travel to John Carroll on Friday night for a game with the Patriots.
