Despite winning its first five football games in 2009 and stretching a winning streak which spanned parts of three seasons to 19 games, Loyola Blakefield took a step backwards last fall.
In retrospect it was hard to avoid. The Dons were coming off perhaps the best season in school history, an 11-0 romp to the MIAA A Conference crown in 2008, followed by the graduation of a wealth of Division I talent. Loyola lost four of its final six games, including a disappointing 47-28 loss to Calvert Hall on Thanksgiving Day.
The Dons remain young as 2010 approaches, but head coach Brian Abbott is very excited about the group and the work they have done. The road back to the top gets underway on Saturday (4:00 p.m.), as the Dons face a tremendous challenge in WCAC powerhouse DeMatha in the I-95 Kickoff Classic at Towson University.
