With the dual meet tied, 32-32, Winters Mill’s hopes of beating Southern Garrett for the first time all came down to 130-pound Gunner Cullison.  And Cullison’s third period fall sealed the win for the Flacons; the first ever over the Rams, 38-32.

Southern Garret trailed the entire match, which started at 135 pounds, as mush as 32-13 before edging their way back into the dual meet.

“We have been climbing the rope towards Southern Garret over the years and have fallen just short.  That was a big monkey, and we really wanted that one bad,” Winters Mill coach John Lowe said.  “Harford Tech took them to the edge, so to beat them by 30 points was a good day.”

Seeing Bubba Scheffel bump all the way up to the 215-pound weightclass, the Rams won five of the next six matches, with pins from Scheffel, Coy Ozias (112) and Tanner Massey (125), a major decision by Austin Shaffer (103) and a decision from Nick Stewart at 119.

But Cullison’s fall was the match winner for Winters Mill, adding to prior falls by Keith Steine (140), Cody Sharkey (145) and Marshal Chang (189).

The Falcons opened the match with a tech fall by 135-pounder Wes Cook, and stormed to a 17-0 lead with Steine and Sharkey’s falls at 140 and 145, respectively, and saw later wins from Chase Cullison and Marshal Chang, and a fall by Justin Kozera at 285.

“This team is really young, so we are still filling out.  I don’t think they are old enough to know they should be nervous,” Lowe explained.  “The nice thing is that they feel that they can open up, and they have shown that they are coachable.

“I thought we were in shape today, and hopefully we keep that up.”

Winters Mill notched a second in of the day in the closing match with Harford Tech, beating the Cobras, 52-21.

Pinning seven of their opponents, Kozera and company attained 10 wins in the 14 matches contested, allowing Dillon Brush (171), George Majchrzak (189), Tyler Granese (119) and Bret Blevins (125) to walk away with wins.
