Wilde Lake’s football team was still frustrated from last week’s 14-6 loss to upstart Hammond and took it out on visiting Mount Hebron on Saturday.
The Wildecats rolled up over 300 yards and posted 28 first quarter points en route to a 50-0 victory over the Vikings on Homecoming.
“We worked real hard this week in practice, trying to correct some of the issues we felt we had last week in the game with Hammond,” said Wilde Lake coach Mike Harrison. “The kids came out and played hard today.”
The Wildecats jumped out to an early lead after running back Terrell Nickens ran it in from 45-yards out. Nickens scored again on a 12-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Joe Kelly.
Wilde Lake also got first quarter scores from AJ Harris on a 20-yard rush and EJ Gilman with a 16-yard run. In the second half, Anthony Miller and Michael Powell both ran for touchdowns.
With the win, Wilde Lake improved to 3-1 while Mount Hebron dropped to 0-4.
But it wasn’t just offense that propelled the Wildecats, the defense turned in a pretty dominating performance too.
The Vikings were held to just one first down, 30 total yards of offense and quarterback Malik Gilmore was pressured and stepped out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
Defensive back Nick Pelletier returned a fumble 36-yards for a score and later in the third quarter, intercepted a pass. Devin McCoy also had an interception and recorded a sack. Zathy Ndiang recorded a sack and was credited with the safety.
Next week is a pivotal game for Wilde Lake as they travel to Oakland Mills which was sitting atop the Howard County standings coming into Saturday.
“We’re excited about playing Oakland Mills next week,” said Harrison. “Our game plan is going to be similar to what we did today which was try to send different combinations and get some pass pressure.”
