Bel Air High’s boys’ soccer team wanted nothing more than to play on its home field for the Class 2A state semifinals. But Wicomico’s desire to end 34 years of frustration proved to be too strong for the Bobcats.

Wicomico outlasted Bel Air, 5-4, in penalty kicks to advance to its first state semifinals since Gerald Ford was the sitting President and Jimmy Carter had been voted into the White House. The eastern shore school will play Liberty Friday evening at Bel Air.

Wicomico (15-0-1 overall) goalie Greg LaFrance stopped Herb Hand’s penalty kick to seal the UCBAC champ Bobcats’ fate. Carson Kalama had Bel Air’s only goal in the first half. Kyle Tapia had a first half goal for Wicomico.

Bel Air concludes the season with a 14-3-1 mark.
