Despite a number of close chances in first half for Beth Tfiloh, as well a few for St. John’s Catholic Prep, the two squads played a scoreless first 40 minutes in the MIAA C Conference soccer match on Tuesday, before the host Warriors would go on to prevail, 2-1, in overtime.
Eight minutes into the second half, St. John’s scored on a breakaway by Austin Rose, to take a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Carson Jones. Beth Tfiloh increased its intensity and attacked relentlessly and came close to equalizing several times. Finally, with 15 minutes to go in regulation, the Warriors’ Joe Troy played a diagonal ball into space for Yaniv Yaffe, who beat the keeper to the ball in the box and slid it home to tie the game.
BTS continued to knock on the door and had penalty shot turned away with five minutes to go, as the game remained deadlocked through regulation.
In overtime, it took just two minutes for the combination of Troy and Yaffe to supply the conclusion. Troy took a shot in the box only to see it deflected, but Yaffe alertly found the loose ball and drove home the game-winner.
Beth Tfiloh is now 2-3 in conference play and 2-4-1 overall. St. John’s Catholic Prep fell to 0-6 in the conference.
