Long-time Dulaney athletic trainer passes from colon cancer
Varsity Sports Network joins Dulaney High School and the Baltimore high school athletic community in mourning the passing of Bryan Read, M.Ed., LAT, ATC, the long-time athletic trainer at Dulaney in Baltimore County.
Read had been battling colon cancer, which had metastasized into bones, last winter, and more recently, into his bladder. Last month, he made the difficult decision to discontinue his treatment and entered hospice care at Gilchrist Center in Towson, where he passed last Tuesday. He was 36 years old.
He was assigned to Dulaney through Towson Sports Medicine, which he joined in 2007 after completing his undergraduate degree at Hofstra University and graduate studies at the University of Virginia. He also was a graduate of St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville.
“Bryan treated countless student athletes over the past 12 years,” read a statement from the Maryland Athletic Trainers Association. “He was a tireless worker and played a very important role in the development and growth of the sports medicine outreach program at Towson Sports Medicine. He, among others, set the standard for care in Baltimore County public high schools for over a decade. For as long as he was able, he made every effort to work, wherever and whenever he was needed. He was a consummate professional who will be missed.”
A viewing for Read will take place on Thursday, Sept. 5 at Mitchell-Weidefeld Funeral Home, 6500 York Road, Baltimore, MD 21212, from 3:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 at St. Joseph Church in Cockeysville, at 100 Church Lane.
In regards to condolences, flowers, etc., Read and his family would love to see contributions be put into his scholarship fund which was developed last year. The Bryan Read Scholarship Fund will also receive all proceeds from a 5k to be held at Dulaney, in Read’s honor, on Sept. 15th.
