Former Havre de Grace star was fixture in Harford County athletics

Varsity Sports Network and the Harford County high school athletic community mourns the recent passing of Johnny Brooks.

Brooks died Sept. 22. He was to share football coaching duties with Albert Goode at Joppatowne this fall.

Brooks coached football and basketball teams at Havre de Grace and Aberdeen. He guided Havre de Grace to the Class 1A state football final in 2010 and, the following year, Aberdeen to the 3A semifinals.

Sheldon Shealer, longtime coordinator of the Maryland State Media Football Poll and state football historian, said Brooks is the first coach to guide two programs to the state semifinals.

Brooks, a 1982 graduate of Havre de Grace, quarterbacked the Warriors to the 1981 Class C state championship. He also played basketball and baseball at Havre de Grace.

He continued his football careerĀ  at Clemson University before transferring to Towson State (now Towson) University as a wide receiver for the 1986 season.

In 1994, Brooks returned to Havre de Grace where he taught and coach for 17 seasons before moving to Aberdeen. Brooks coached Havre de Grace football for 13 seasons.
