Urbana’s Matt Semelsberger (215) survived nearly being pinned and scored a fall of his own against Luke Barter with 5:59 on the clock in the final bout of the match to hoist the Hawks of Frederick County to a 41-31 Class 4A-3A state semifinal dual meet victory over Stephen Decatur of Berlin, Maryland, at Linganore High School on Saturday.
Also pinning for the Hawks were David Abretski (103), Nick Frank (119), Steven Redding (152) and Daniel Johnson (160), Joe Rimel (171), with decisions from Brandon Plante (112) and Billy Krop (130) as the Hawks pulled an upset over the top-seeded Seahawks.
Pinning for the Seahawks were Nick McLoota (135), Andrew Boradaile (140), Johnny Soghomonia (145) and Nick Craven (285), with a major decision from Mike Meekins (189), and a decision by Seth Goggin (125).
“I’m the one who normally likes to do the headlocks, but he got me in one. When he did, I did what the coaches have taught me and hooked the leg and was able to get out of it because I pulled through mentally,” said Semelsberger, who executed his pin with the match tied at 10-10.
“There was about 20 seconds left, and as I said, the headlock is one of my main moves,” said Semelsberger. “He rolled through it twice, but the third time, it wasn’t happenening. I just squeezed it real tight and made it painful.”
