One team was expected to be dominant. The other team came out of nowhere. 

Oakland Mills High and Broadneck boys’ basketball squads have taken a different road this regular season. Wednesday night at 7 p.m., their paths will cross in the District V title game at Mount Hebron.

The No. 6 Scorpions completed a perfect run through Howard County with a 58-38 drubbing of Mount Hebron as senior center Greg Whittington scored 34 points including his 1,000th point. Oakland Mills (22-0 overall, 19-0 Howard) have won 22 straight regular season decisions in Howard County.

Broadneck, 8-15 last season, picked its 20th victory with a 70-60 victory at Southern in Anne Arundel County league play. Junior forward Darnell Solomon posted a double-double with 24 points and 17 rebounds, and Bobby Bates added 12. 

The No. 10 Bruins (20-2 overall, 14-2 Anne Arundel) have won seven straight decisions since a 71-66 loss to No. 16 Annapolis Jan. 28. Broadneck has secured the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A East Region playoffs. 

Oakland Mills will be the top seed in the 2A South Region tournament. The Scorpions fell in overtime to Prince George’s County’s Gwynn Park, which eventually lost to City College in the state finals at Comcast Center.
