Local baseball players Brendan Butler of John Carroll and Paul Beers of Atholton were among four Maryland recruits on the six-man early signing class announced by the Towson University baseball program, earlier this month. Butler and Beers will join the Tigers in the spring of 2012.
Butler led John Carroll in hitting last spring, as a junior, when he claimed All-MIAA honors. He is an infielder with speed and extra-base power.
Beers served as both a pitcher and a catcher at Atholton in 2010 as he helped the Raiders post a 20-5 record and win a regional title. On the mound he went 4-1 with 1.17 ERA, over 30 innings, and recorded 31 strikeouts. He also batted .390, scored 19 run and drove in 21.
Also signing with Towson to play for head coach Mike Gottlieb were Peter Bowles of Quince Orchard and Ryne Willard of Smithsburg, as well as Nick Cioffi of Averill Park, NY, and Taylor Clarke of Ashburn, Va.
