AACS’ strong debut earns it a place at No. 20

by Pat O’Malley

Not much action on the local volleyball scene last week as the top 8 teams in the VSN Preseason Poll stayed put, including top ranked Atholton that opened with a 3-0 victory over Reservoir in Howard County action. Hereford was the only top 10 team to lose and slipped from No. 9 to 12 resulting in a minor shuffle of teams from 9 through 12.

Teams ranked 13 through 17 preseason stayed intact while Wilde Lake and Perryville of Cecil County and UCBAC slid a spot each to 18 and 19 respectively with season opening wins. The 20th and final spot goes to Annapolis Area Christian School that went 1-1 in its promotion from the IAAM B Conference to the A Conference.

The Eagles went undefeated in the B Conference and 17-1 overall last season taking No. 15 in the Final VSN Top 20. AACS opened in the “A” with a 3-0 upset of Notre Dame Prep that was tied for No. 20 with Perryville to start this season after a couple coaches in the IAAM picked NDP to be one of this year’s top teams.

No. 6 Mount de Sales, the defending IAAM A Conference champions, are the favorites to repeat and dealt AACS its first loss by 3-0 last week.

There are a few marquis VSN Top 20 matches coming up this week including No. 2 South River at No. 9 Broadneck, on Tuesday, and No. 1 Atholton at No. 14 Severna Park, on Friday.

ATTENTION VOLLEYBALL FANS, PARENTS, PLAYERS AND COACHES –

VSN would like to get your opinion of 2-game matches that frequently occur in tournaments that have really been on the rise over the last few years. Should winning both sets and going 2-0 against an opponent count the same as the 3-win victories do?

It’s been the accepted rule that 2-0 wins and 0-2 losses DO NOT count toward a team’s overall record. Why not?

Often when highly regarded teams meet in a 2-setter in a tournament and one of them goes 2-0 as No. 9 Broadneck did against No. 1 Atholton on Saturday at the Westminster Tournament, the winning Bruins have to feel pretty good. But it goes for naught.

An example of something similar happens in baseball where 7-inning games count the same as 9-inning games in amateur , high school and college often when teams go from regular season to tournament play.

What do you think of 2-0 and 0-2 decisions counting on your overall record and 1-1 ties count for nothing gained or lost?

Let us know by EMAILING to patomalleysports@aol.com by Friday, Sept. 14 .WE WILL REPORT THE RESPONSE.
