In a matchup of top 10 girls’ soccer teams, No. 2 Mercy High and No. 5 John Carroll played to a scoreless tie in an IAAM A Conference match Wednesday afternoon in Bel Air.
In the biggest spot of the season so far, young goalies came up big as Mercy’s junior Rachel Bourne and Mary Oakey and John Carroll (8-0-2 overall, 3-0-2 IAAM A) junior Gina Maiorana kept the opposing offenses at bay. The Patriots had most of the offensive push in the first 40 minutes.
The second 40 minutes saw Mercy (9-1-1, 3-0-1 IAAM A) get most of the opportunities, then Maiorana stepped in the second 10-minute extra session, stopping a shot by Alexis Prior-Brown. It’s the second tie of the season for the Patriots, who went 100 minutes with defending IAAM A Conference champs Archbishop Spalding before settling in a 1-1 final.
Monday, John Carroll heads to Owings Mills for a matchup with No. 1 McDonogh School. The Eagles moved to 8-0 (5-0 IAAM A) with a 3-0 victory over Maryvale Prep Wednesday.
Mercy takes on another Top 10 team Friday as UCBAC power and No. 6 C. Milton Wright comes to Northern Parkway. The Magic comes right back Saturday with a league match against Maryvale.
