History certainly didn’t repeat itself Wednesday night for the Rising Sun Tigers, who not only knocked-off the defending Class 1A/2A state dual champion Bel Air, but did so to avenge an earlier season loss and qualify for their own shot at a 2011 State Dual Title.
The last time the Bobcats and Tigers went head-to-head, Bel Air left with a 40-36 decision, but the Tigers kept the meet closer on Wednesday, scoring exactly the same (38-38) after 14 weight classes.
Both Bel Air and Rising Sun won seven matches on the night, even with the Tigers giving up a forfeit at 119, but the five falls recorded by Rising Sun outranked Bel Air’s three for the added team-point and 2011 1A/2A East Regional dual crown, 39-38.
Crucial falls came by Scott Hayes (171), Joe Juergens (103), Nick Billings (112), Adam Heffelfinger (125) and Anthony Cimorosi (145), but every point counted in the meet, from Robert Rakes’s 21st point in his 21-6 tech fall at 125, to losing Tigers keeping major decisions from tech falls and not getting pinned.
Bel Air scored falls with Tom Kuegler (189), Jeff Traore (215) and Tony Proctor (130), while William Holder-Moore earned a tech at 160. Both Steve and John Cross notched major decisions at 140 and 152, with Steve ending four points shy of a technical fall.
The defending Bobcats weren’t the No. 1 seed in the region; Rising Sun, being the No. 4 seed, already took care of that, edging a 37-31 win over host Parkside in the semifinals.
Going into the final match against Parkside, the Tigers were neck-and-neck with their opponents, 31-31, but Cimorosi made his first clutch move of the night and sealed the 37-31 victory with a fall.
Rising Sun will represent the 1A/2A East in Saturday’s State Duals, going up against Owings Mills (North), Glenelg (South) and Winters Mill (West) at Liganore High School.
