The Towson University women’s soccer team is gearing up for its 2010 season opener, on Aug. 21 at Loyola University, and it is three local players who lead the Tigers into battle as tri-captains.
Jocelyn Papciak, a junior from Atholton, along with seniors Samantha Young of Severna Park and Melissa Gomes of John Carroll have assumed the leadership role seeking to improve on a 7-11-2 campaign from one year ago.
Papciak is the team’s goalkeeper. Last fall she played in 11 games and made 10 starts, posting a 1.79 goals against average while stopping 72.9 percent of the shots she faced. She also played in 11 games and made seven starts as a freshman.
At Atholton, Papciak was a four-year starter and a three time All-County pick. She was also twice named team MVP
Young is a forward who has appeared in 48 games during her college career. She was also a two-year captain at Severna Park where she scored 49 goals and handed out 30 assists while leading her team to three Anne Arundel County championships.
Gomes was named to the Colonial Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team as a freshman and has played in 53 games during her three year career with the Tigers. She was a four-year letter winner at John Carroll and was a member of the Patriots 2005 team which went 21-0 on its way to the IAAM A Conference title.
