Area teams look earn spot in state football Final Four; Westminster/Mervo highlight three Top 20 matches

The area football postseason now focuses on the state public tournament which moves into the state quarterfinal phase, starting Friday evening.

Defending Class 3A state champ Franklin has a postseason rematch with a Montgomery County powerhouse while Top 20 squads Mervo and Westminster meet in 3A Elite Eight match. There are also Top 20 matches in 2A and 1A.

The quarterfinal winners advance to the state semifinals Thanksgiving weekend.

Below is the top five games of the weekend, followed by the complete area schedule.

No. 14 Westminster (9-2) at No. 5 Mervo (11-0)

What: Class 3A state quarterfinal

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: Off to its best start in school history, Mervo, which has posted four straight shutouts, looks to advance to the state semifinals for the second straight season. After an 0-2 start, Westminster, seeking its first state semifinal berth since 2012, has won nine straight decisions averaging more than 35 points.

 

Tayshawn Watters will try to take Elkton back to the 2A state semifinals as the No. 12 Elks host 16th-ranked Liberty in a quarterfinal match in Cecil County.

No. 16 Liberty (8-3) at No. 12 Elkton (11-0)

What: Class 2A state quarterfinal

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: Elkton will try to secure a second consecutive 2A Final Four berth. Liberty has back-to-back postseason victories for the first time after topping Howard County squad Glenelg and Oakland Mills in West Region play, and a third would mean a first state semifinal berth.

 

DaVaughn Curbeam (6) will look to continue No. 15 Parkville’s perfect season Friday against 17th-ranked Old Mill in a 4A state quarterfinal at Perry Hall.

No. 17 Old Mill (9-2) vs. No. 15 Parkville (11-0)

What: Class 4A state quarterfinal

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Perry Hall

What you need to know: Parkville looks to continue its historic season with a first state semifinal berth. Old Mill, in its first postseason since a run of 18 straight, is a win away from its first state semifinal since 2014.

 

Xavier Cokley and fourth-ranked Franklin continue their pursuit of another 3A state title Friday night at Montgomery County’s Damascus.

No. 4 Franklin (9-2) at Damascus (9-2)

What: Class 3A state quarterfinal

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: The Indians look for a fifth state semifinal berth in seven years. Damascus, which beat Franklin in the 2016 3A state final, features arguably the nation’s No. 1 player in defensive linemen Bryan Bresee, who’s committed to reigning national champion Clemson University.

 

Milford Mill, with quarterback Rishon Holmes (1), welcomes Prince George’s County’s Potomac in a 2A state quarterfinal Friday night in Baltimore County.

Potomac (10-1) at No. 11 Milford Mill Academy (10-1)

What: Class 2A state quarterfinal

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: Milford Mill, which only blemish came against defending 3A state champ Franklin, tries to reach the state semifinals for the first time since 2017. Potomac, led by Maryland commit Corey Dyches (wide receiver/defensive back), only lost to unbeaten Prince George’s County rival Douglass, the No. 1 overall seed in Class 2A.
