Rising Sun and Patterson Mill baseball usher conference’s return; Tigers win 2-1
Unlike many other area high school athletic conferences, the Upper Chesapeake Athletic Conference (UCBAC), which is comprised of 15 schools in Harford and Cecil Counties, has had no athletic competitions for more than a year.
Following the 2019-2020 winter sports season the UCBAC endured the cancellation of the 2020 spring season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While some other conferences played limited fall schedules or moved those sports into a condensed spring season, the UCBAC remained idle through the fall and winter seasons.
That dubious streak ended on Wednesday when Patterson Mill traveled to Rising Sun to play baseball, with the host Tigers claiming a 2-1 walk-off victory, in eight innings.
Both teams scored single runs in the second inning, but the rest of the afternoon was filled with goose eggs until Rising Sun’s Jackson Stickney delivered a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to win it for the Tigers. Matty Lynch scored the winning run after doubling earlier in the inning.
Lynch was also Rising Sun’s starting pitcher and he worked the first give innings, allowing just three hits and one run, while collecting six strikeouts and walking six. Hayden Spioch followed with 2.2 scoreless innings and Lane Weismiller got the final out in the top of the eighth to capture the win. Weismiller also went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in the Tigers’ first run.
Patterson Mill’s Ethan Shertzer went 1-for-3 with a double and drove in the Huskies’ only run with a sac fly.
