MIAA A Conference soccer squads begin a 20-game league schedule this week

After very limited play in 2020 and no MIAA league competition, MIAA A Conference soccer programs are set to return to the pitch this week to begin an unprecedented 20-game regular season, now that the conference has grown to 11 teams.

Up until 2019, the A Conference, widely regarded as one of the elite high school soccer leagues in the nation, played a home-and-home schedule format with every team playing every other team twice. This created a 14 to 16 game league schedule, depending on the number of teams in the conference in any given year. When Boys’ Latin moved up to the A Conference for the 2019 season, giving the league 10 teams, the A Conference was divided into two five team divisions. Teams played a home-and-home with every team in their division and met the teams in the opposite division once each. This created a 13-game league schedule.

For the 2021 season, the league has grown once again, as Concordia Prep becomes the 11th member of the conference. Rather than play an unbalanced divisional schedule, the coaches voted to return to the one division, home-and-home format and the plan was approved by the MIAA’s Executive Committee, creating the 20-game regular season and an earlier start than normal.

The season will kick off on Tuesday when St. Paul’s visits John Carroll, with the other eight teams matching up for their openers on Wednesday. Here is this week’s opening slate of games:
