The 6th annual Baltimore-Long Island Lacrosse Challenge took place Saturday on a beautiful spring day on Long Island, NY, as St. Paul’s traveled north and captured it’s sixth straight win in the series with an exhilarating, 7-5 victory over Garden City (NY). It marks the the fifth consecutive year the Crusaders have beaten the Trojans (the other game was a win over Cold Spring Harbor). In a tight, hard-fought, back-and-forth contest, St. Paul’s converted two late goals for the victory.
Goalie Gunnar Waldt was spectacular in the nets, making 14 stops, five of which were point-blank saves. The Crusader defense, led by George Fries, Travis Wood, Josh Matanin, Wyatt Land, Connor Curro, Will Ridgely and Chris Colnitis, held the high scoring Long Islanders to a season low five goals.
Robby Maddux led all scorers with three tallies, while Spencer Parks added two goals and two assists. Taylor Michel and Brett Parker also added single scores, and Michel dished out two assists as well. George Fries, Jay Carlson, and Parker each added single helpers to round out the St. Paul’s scoring.
St. Paul’s improved its overall record to 8-3 on the season. The Crusies (2-2 in the MIAA A Conference) return to league action on Tuesday,as they face a Gilman team coming off a huge overtime victory over Boys’ Latin.
