Mount St. Joseph held Good Counsel scoreless for the first five minutes of their meeting, Saturday in the consolation bracket of the Gonzaga DC Classic, and the Gaels never trailed in a 46-33 win over the Falcons.

Junior guard Gavin Stephenson led St. Joe (5-2) with 12 points and his three at the halftime buzzer gave St. Joe a 23-10 lead.  In the fourth quarter the Falcons made the game interesting, as senior guard Matt McCarthy hit a three with two minutes to go to cut the lead to 10.  After a turnover, McCarthy hit another three to cut the lead to 39-32, with just over a minute left.

Stephenson, however, made 5-of-6 foul shots down the stretch and the Gaels held on for the victory. Stephenson led all scorers with 12 points.

Junior guard David Windsor added 10 points the Gael and senior forward Brian Morton had nine.  The Falcons were led by McCarthy with 11 points and senior forward Randy Echols added six points.

The Gaels will play Chantilly (VA) on Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at American University’s Bender Arena, in the tournament’s fifth place game.
