South Carroll gets through the pool round unscathed, falls to Decatur in finals; C. Milton Wright takes fifth

by Billy Loverocket

The Stephen Decatur wrestling team finished the dual meet portion of the 2018-2019 season as 3A state champs, edging Linganore in an exciting final, 28-27. The title run was not without its bumps though, and one of those occurred at last year’s Iron Horse duals where the Seahawks fell to two-time 1A state champs, Southern Garrett, 36-35, in the pool rounds. They came back to take third with a win over Cape Henlopen (DE), 40-32.

Stephen Decatur showed its strength with a team victory at the Iron Horse Duals.

There would be no disappointments in this year’s installment at C. Milton Wright High School. Decatur, who came in as the No. 3 team in the latest Maryland rankings, proved that lofty status true as they blew the competition out of the water with its closest match being with Leonardtown (No. 25), 42-21. In the pool round the Eastern Shore power also dropped No. 23 Bel Air 67-9, Howard 66-9, Boys’ Latin 70-3, John Carroll 64-10, Cape Henlopen 49-19, and Bishop Ireton (VA) 75-6.

“You gotta have some team goals,” Seahawks coach Todd Martinek said. “Coming off a state title, you gotta make goals for them. Sometimes in the Bayside Conference we’re dominating teams. It’s one of those things we wanted to put on our checklist. We wanted to win.

“I didn’t think we’d be as dominate as we were. I knew over Christmas break we were wrestling well. We’ve only wrestled three duals, so it felt like we were a little hungry, but I didn’t know how good we were because we’ve been wrestling ourselves so much. I felt like we could do it. I’m really happy that we won it.”

No. 15 South Carroll hung more points on Decatur than any team but still came up short, 57-23. Bonus points were the theme of this one as every match resulted in bonus points for each team. Decatur jumped out to an 18-0 lead with pins by Noah Reho (145, No. 6 at 138), Alex Koulikov (152), and No. 6 James Parana (160).

No. 5 Antonio Bradford (170) provided one of the few bright spots for the Cavaliers with a third period pin of Adham Libwam, 4:31, making the score 18-6.

The Seahawks effectively closed the door at this point going on another win streak, this one of four matches, with three pins and a forfeit to make the score 42-6. Putting falls on the scorecard were DJ Taylor (182, No. 13 at 170), Micah Bourne (195, No. 8 at 182), and John Hofman (220). T.D. Ortega got his hand raised in forfeit at heavyweight.

From this point forward South Carroll would have to be perfect and pick up six falls to tie. At 106, No. 3 Michael Pizzuto kept hope alive when he planted Logan Intrieri in the second period, 3:21. When No. 7 Ryan Athey could only muster a tech-fall, 19-3, over Austin Miller the championship was sealed for Decatur.

No. 4 Jagger Clapsadle (120) piled more points onto the Seahawks count with a tech-fall of his own over No.18 Gage Owen, 17-2, to run the score to 47-17. No. 5 AJ Rodrigues (126) dropped Dustin Morrow in 2:30 for the Cavaliers’ final points.

Wins by No. 8 Nico D’Amico (132) and Kyle Elliot (138) closed the dual on a high note for the Seahawks and push the final tally to, 57-23.

“It was great competition here,” said South Carroll coach Matt Thomas. “You had the two-time returning state champs (Southern Garrett), you got Decatur. We went 7-1 this weekend.

“We knew going into the finals they were a very solid team, top to bottom. (There’s) a lot to work on. Hopefully we see them in February and win some of those outcomes that we didn’t get this time. I can’t be mad at the guys but there’s a lot of stuff we have to work on. It’s a very, very young team.”

To reach the finals, South Carroll got past No. 18 Southern Garrett 35-31. In that match, Owen upset No. 10 Aiden Schwab by major-decision, 14-4.

Other foes to fall at the Cavaliers’ hand in the pool competition were No. 26 C. Milton Wright 46-20, North County 64-12, Hereford 54-24, John Carroll 70-9, Walter Johnson 60-18, and Oakdale 52-27.

The match with the host squad featured three ranked-on-ranked matchups, highlighted by two-time 4A/3A state champ, No. 3 James Riveira’s thrilling 9-1 major-decision over Rodrigues at 126. Pizzuto put up a tech-fall over No. 14 Demetrios Gourgoulianis, 19-4. Demetrios’ brother, Staki (No. 5) got a little family revenge with a 2:48 second decking of Owen.

Talking once the dust settled, Thomas reflected on the big win over Southern Garrett and the journey to the finals.

“We got the matchups we wanted, and we won all the matchups wanted. So, we strategized where it needed to be, and the kids went out and got the job done. They did what they needed to do.

“We went on from there and beat C. Milton Wright. That was another big win. They gave us a loss last year. The goal was to make it to the finals and have a good showing. We got there but obviously it’s back to the drawing board and fix those mistakes.”

C. Milton Wright’s James Riveira works for back points against South Carroll’s AJ Rodrigues.

Pizzuto and Athey both posted perfect 8-0 records this weekend. Rodrigues and Jake Rippeon were 7-1, while Bradford was 6-1 for South Carroll.

C. Milton Wright came back to pull off a mild upset of Leonardtown, 39-34, to grab the fifth-place prize. In the early rounds, the Mustangs downed John Carroll 60-21, Walter Johnson, 70-12, Hereford 57-21, North County 48-31, and Bishop Ireton 66-11. Southern Garrett handed them their other loss, 42-25.

Wright’s match with Leonardtown again put Staki on center stage, this time with No. 2 Sean Vosburgh. Unfortunately for the home team fans, the rankings held true and Vosburgh walked away with a 4-2 win.

Cape Henlopen defeated Southern Garrett, 42-27, in the battle for third. Unranked Boys’ Latin surprised Bel Air in the pool rounds with a 40-36 win.
As with all tournaments, there will be upsets when quality wrestlers clash. Two such outcomes unfolded here amongst the locals. No. 6 CJ Polesovsky (John Carroll) pinned South Carroll’s Bradford in the first period, 1:12. Another Patriot grappler had a hand in the other notable upset as unranked Ian Moccia (113) picked up a fall of his own over Bel Air’s No. 9 Trevor Lorin, 3:11.

Stephen Decatur had five wrestlers finish the competition unblemished, Koulikov (152/160) and Bourne (182/195) were 8-0. Clapsadle (120/126), D’Amico (132), and Parana (160/170) posted 7-0 records. Morrow (126) was 3-1, Taylor (170/182) 7-1. Running up 6-1 tallies were Reho and Hofman.

“We wrestled tough,” Martinek continued. “We got sixes, when we needed to get sixes. We generally stayed off our back. And that’s what it takes to win team events. Since there’s really only a team (state) title now, we need a team effort. We brought seven backup guys. All seven backup guys wrestled and got wins. So, we got a little depth.

“But this was the first time we’ve been all healthy, all on weight. So, if you say you’re going to be like this in two months, you have to have a horseshoe up your butt for that to happen. I like where we’re at. We certainly couldn’t be doing any better than we did this weekend.”
