Seven area high school teams received No. 1 seeds Monday as the pairings for the state volleyball tournament were announced.

Centennial, the top-ranked squad in VSN’s Top 20, has top billing in the Class 3A East Region, and will play the winner of Friday’s opening round game between 12th ranked Mount Hebron and Atholton.

The Eagles, seeking their 15th state crown, have a tune up Thursday night against No. 5 Severna Park in the District V championship game at Annapolis.

Most pundits expect a third matchup between the Eagles and No. 3 River Hill (seeded third) for the region crown next week. Centennial defeated the then-No. 1 Hawks in four games in a regular season match before River Hill swept the Eagles for the Gator Invitational crown, a couple of days later.

Severna Park is the No. 2 seed in 4A East with three-time defending 4A champ Broadneck is seeded sixth the in the region. The 13th ranked Bruins start their title defense with a first-round match with North County Friday.

Three Baltimore County teams, Dulaney, Loch Raven and Towson, have No. 1 seeds. No. 4 Towson, which defeated Dulaney for the Baltimore County crown last week, will host Western or North Harford in a 3A North quarterfinal match Monday. The Generals lost to River Hill in last year’s state semifinals.

Dulaney volleyballNo. 15 Dulaney hosts Southwestern or Patterson in 4A North quarterfinal action. Loch Raven, ranked 20th, starts its postseason against Brunswick or Oakdale in a 1A North quarterfinal.

No. 10 Fallston, which plays North Harford for the UCBAC title Wednesday evening at Cecil Community College, has the top seed in 2A East. The Cougars play Edgewood or Bel Air in Monday’s quarterfinals.

City College is the No. 1 seed in 2A North and will play Chesapeake-Baltimore or Randallstown in Monday’s quarterfinals. Defending region champ Eastern Tech is seeded second.

In 1A East, Joppatowne is No. 1 and will face Harford Tech or defending region champ Patterson Mill in the quarterfinals.

Defending region champ Marriotts Ridge is the fourth seed in 2A South. The Mustangs are hoping for another Final Four trip after losing to eventual state champ Francis Scott Key in the semifinals.

Regional semifinal takes place Nov. 10 followed by region title games, Nov. 12-13 at the higher seed. The state Final Four matches return to the University of Maryland’s Ritchie Coliseum with 3A semifinals Nov. 15, 4A Nov. 16, 1A Nov. 17 and 2A Nov. 18.

The 1A and 3A state titles will be decided Nov. 19 in College Park with 2A and 4A champion decided Nov. 22.
