Boys’ Latin saved its best for last on Saturday afternoon in Laurel as they stunned St. Vincent Pallotti when senior Wells Stanwick nailed a three from the top of the key, with seconds remaining in regulation, to give the Lakers a dramatic 48-46 come from behind win over the Panthers.
The Panthers (1-3, 0-1) raced out to a 21-7 first quarter lead, but BL stepped up the intensity in the second quarter, outscoring coach Shea Johnson’s squad 18-10. The Panthers held a six point lead at half, and a five point lead after three quarters of play, before BL offense caught fire.
Greg Pyke, known for his prowess on the gridiron and lacrosse field, hit six free throws and made a key layup down the stretch and Robert White hit two free throws and a clutch jumper before Stanwick’s heroics. Just seconds before Stanwick’s winning shot, Langston Burnett scored for the Panthers to give his team a one point lead with five seconds on the clock.
BL coach Jeff Parson’s called time-out and designed a play but Pallotti pressured the ball.
“Coach put up a play, but Pallotti played awesome defense,” said a humble Stanwick. “(Matt) Rees threw me the ball, I threw up a prayer and it went in.”
Pyke finished with 16 points, with eight coming in the fourth quarter. Robert White also had 16 for Boys’ Latin (2-0, 1-0). Stanwick added eight, all of which came in the second half.
“We were 1-19 last year,” said Pike. “We wanted to come out here and get a win.”
Senior captain Jeremy Freeman said that it was the best game he’s ever played at BL.
“Greg Pike had a great effort and Wells Stanwick hit an amazing shot,” said Freeman. “We came back strong.”
Parsons said he just wants his team to be competitive this year.
“We just want to compete,” said Parsons. “The kids have worked hard, I’m proud of them. I’m very happy for them today.”
Nine different players scored for Pallotti. Jare Adesenya led the Panthers with nine points and Aubrey Williams had eight.
