John Carroll and St. Paul’s opened the 2010 MIAA B Conference schedule on Friday afternoon in Brooklandville, and the host Crusaders battled their to a 16-8 victory.

The Crusaders completed a 55 yard pass from Spencer Parks to Teddie Martinez to set up their first score, a 12-yard TD reception by Jay Carlson, from Parks, early in the second quarter.  The conversion attempt failed, but St. Paul’s extended their lead with a 41 yard field goal by Nick Skudrna and took a 9-0 advantage to the half.

The Crusaders stretched their advantage to 16-0, early in the third quarter, when Taylor Michel got loose for a 71-yard touchdown run.

John Carroll responded with a 65-yard drive of its own, capped by a Brian Hunt three-yard run, followed by a two point conversion by Hunt to close the gap to 16-8.

London Fitzhugh intercepted his second pass of the game for St. Paul’s to end the Patriots’ chance of a comeback.

The Crusaders will be at home again next week when they host the St. Mary’s at Tullai Field at 4:00 p.m., in another B Conference tilt.  John Carroll will stay on the road next week, as they visit defending league champion Archbishop Spalding on Friday night.
