Charlie Gaines went 3 for 3 with two home runs and 4 RBI as No. 7 St. Paul’s School knocked off McDonogh School, 7-3, in a MIAA A Conference contest Thursday in Owings Mills.
Gaines hit a two-run homerun in the Crusaders’ first-at bat.Eagles sophomore Kyle Simmons hit a leadoff four-bagger, pulling McDonogh to 2-1.
In the third, junior Herbie Trice had an RBI then scored when Gaines sent a pitch over the centerfield wall. Simmons responded in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double to cut the Crusader lead to 5-3. Simmons finished 2 for 4, and drove in all three Eagle runs.
With runners on second and third, sophomore Jon Lucido doubled both in, pushing St. Paul’s lead to 7-3. St. Paul’s senior pitcher Paul Giulio would hole the Eagles for the next few innings. Giulio pitched well, scattering five hits and three runs over six innings, striking out seven
St. Paul’s (8-5 overall) is now 5-3 in the MIAA A. They will play Riverdale Baptist from Upper Marlboro in a non-conference game on Friday in Brooklandsville, before playing Archbishop Curley at home on Saturday.
McDonogh (5-8, 1-5 MIAA A) play Loyola Blakefield Friday at home.
