Crusaders keep pace with Gerstell for top spot in MIAA B basketball

St. Paul’s School avenged an earlier loss to Severn School, Friday night, but just barely. The Crusaders went on the road and edged the Admirals, 47-45, to pull into a virtual tie for first place in the MIAA B Conference basketball standings with defending champion Gerstell Academy.

The Crusaders (13-7 overall), who were led by 17 points from Ziggy Reid, are now 8-2 in the B Conference, while Gerstell, which fell in a non-conference game to Montgomery County’s St. Andrew’s Episcopal, is 7-1. The Falcons currently have a slight edge based on winning percentage.

Reid added seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and five deflections. Troy Barthelme added 13 points for the Crusaders, to help counter 22 combined points from Severn’s AJ Burch and Mo Terry. Barthelme also had nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and took two charges.

Severn (9-8, 5-4 MIAA B) is now tied for fourth place with St. John’s Catholic Prep, which lost at Friends School (4-5) on Friday night. Archbishop Curley (7-3), which defeated Indian Creek Schoolin overtime on Friday, currently sits in third place in the league.
