The St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team defeated visiting Episcopal High, 12-10, in their season opener on Monday.

The Knights, visiting Maryland from Houston, Texas, came out strong and took a 7-1 lead with under 10 minutes to play in the first half.

The Saints (1-0) worked their way back into the game, slowly chipping away at the lead through creating turnovers in the midfield, controlling the ball on attack, and gaining possession of the draws.

St. Mary’s trailed 7-4 at the half before making a strong second half push.

The Saints held onto a 12-8 advantage with just three minutes left in the game.  After a yellow card was issued to St. Mary’s for a dangerous shot, Episcopal fought back to bring it to within two.

A timeout helped stop the momentum and the Saints regained control of the ball until time expired.

St. Mary’s received outstanding performances from attackers Kristen Lamon (five goals) and Cailtin Crouse (three goals).  Carly Mullen and Meghan McCarthy led the way on defense and Megan Ward made 15 saves in goal.

Episcopal’s stand out players included Sydney Dupre, Drew Cowan, and Kimberly Khourie.

The Saints will have their IAAM opener against Maryvale at home next week March 22nd.  Episcopal (5-1) will play at Severn on Wednesday before heading back home.
