St. Frances Academy has announced the appointment of Joseph Garner as the school’s new head football coach. Garner is a graduate of Friends School and Morgan University, with extensive high school and college coaching experience.
In 2009 Garner was the secondary coach at McDaniel College and he has also worked as an assistant under local coaching legend Roger Wren at both Baltimore Poly and Patterson. Additionally, Garner is an adjunct professor of physical education at Coppin State University.
The St. Frances program will enter just its third year in the fall of 2010, after playing a non-league campaign in 2008 before entering the MIAA B Conference in 2009. Despite a strong start last fall, the Panthers were besieged by injuries and transfers and the program appeared on the verge of collapse when head coach Mike Clay resigned with three games remaining in the season.
Longtime St. Frances faculty member David Owens, however, stepped in as interim coach for the final three games and the Panthers finished the year at 2-9, including a 2-7 mark in the B Conference.
Garner enters with a fresh start as he looks to build a strong team in the highly competitive B Conference.
