Point places six in the finals, brings home four champs; Owings Mills is second with three titlists, Phil Smith becomes a four-time county champ

by Billy Loverocket

The last time the Sparrow Point wrestling team (No. 14 in the state’s tournament rankings) took to the mats their day ended in disappointment as they dropped their opening match at the 2A state duals to two-time state champion No. 3 Stephen Decatur.

On Saturday afternoon at New Town High School the day would end on an up note as the Point brought home the county title by 79 points, 201-122, over Owings Mills, and their final three grapplers won their matches.

No. 17 Wayne Brooks missed time this season due to injury and his low point total led to a sixth seed. Brooks busted up the bracket starting on Friday when he decked the three seed from Catonsville, Mason Ritter. The sophomore dealt the same fate to the second seeded Dorian Jackson (Eastern Tech) on Saturday morning.

The top seed, No. 19 Morgan Vandergrift of Hereford, awaited Brooks in the gold medal bout. This one was not as easy, but the Pointer walked away with a 6-4 victory for his first county crown after being second a year ago.

Also finishing as runner-ups last year and completing their first title chases were, No. 11 Jake Rallo (170) and No. 5 Lexx Carr (195). Like Brooks, they both had to work for their victories over state ranked opponents.

Rallo squared off with No. 13 Zavion Woodard from the host school and posted a 4-2 decision. Carr’s margin of victory was smaller with a 3-2 edge over No. 13 Alfred Murdock (Western Tech). At 138, No. 15 Luke Hoenig authored a mild upset of No. 13 Jamal Everette (Franklin), 8-3, for his first title.

Sliding into the second position for Sparrows Point were, No. 12 Dominic Ambrosino (106) and No. 9 Richard Davis (132). Kendrick Emani was third at 152, Tyler Maynor placed fourth at 113, and at 160, Jake Lure took fifth.

Two of Owings Mills’ champions joined exclusive clubs as their careers draw to a close, Phil Smith became a four-time county champ and Alex Dufour made it three straight titles.

Smith (No. 2 in MD), who was VSN’s Lightweight of the Year in 2018, is seeking his third consecutive state crown (3rd as a FR) and fourth region crown. A second period fall, 2:20, of Milford Mill’s Brandon Ako sealed the deal here.

Dufour joins Smith in his quest for three state and four region championships. The Eagle’s handy work here ended with a 7-0 shoutout of No. 11 Riley Bozeman (Lansdowne), who was second in the 4A/3A states last year.

Owings Mills’ freshman phenom, No. 8 Amondre Wooden (132), hopes to join his teammate Smith in the four-time champ club one day and made the first leap today. Wooden first cut down to 132 from 138 for the regional duals where he defeated the Point’s Davis, 7-4. This one went into overtime, but Wooden replicated that success with a 9-7 advantage after a takedown in the sudden victory frame.

Hereford’s No. 14 Owen Bell helped pace his squad’s third place spot on the leaderboard. Bell had to overcome the demons of past results for his gold. Ambrosino got the best of him in their dual meet with Sparrows Point and in the Warpath Tournament finals at Franklin. Bell learned from those matches and put together a 6-4 result in his favor.

Lansdowne crowned two first-time champs in No. 21 Jacob Lipscomb (126) and No. 16 Kyree Briscoe (182). Lipscomb used an efficient 9-2 performance in his final with Owings Mills’ Timur Sharipov. Briscoe, who missed last year after being a runner-up as a freshman, got his crown with a 55 second decking of Jaden Holman (Randallstown).

Kenwood’s No. 11 Daylon Duncan was second in the county last year and second at the 4A/3A state tournament. The senior is hoping he started a trend here that continues through the postseason. After capturing the 145lb gold with a 49 second pin of Sherrod Johnson (Randallstown), the hope is, the Bluebird can reverse one more result in the books and earn state supremacy.

Dulaney’s Nick Schiefelbein (No. 16) also bested his second-place finish of a year ago with a 7-0 win against Parkville’s Emmanuel Anokwute. Overlea’s No.15 Jarius Cannon, a former state placer, made it to the top of the county podium for the first time with a 15-8 win over Anthony Sekulow (Parkville) at 160.

Perryn Publico was another first timer at 220lbs. The Eastern tech grappler outdueled Kenwood’s Dave Nwachukw, 7-3.
