Point beats Middletown for the first time ever, Whisner gets 300th win

The Sparrows Point wrestling team has been a regular participant at Oakland Mills’ Scorpion Duals for quite a few years now. As the team has improved, they have fared better with each visit. Eventually, they were able to beat all the teams in the field, except Frederick County’s Middletown. That mountain was toppled this weekend with a 37-32 win. Downing Middletown opened the door for the Point to also capture its first ever Scorpion Duals team title.
“It was an exciting tournament to win because of the teams involved,” Sparrows Point coach Mike Whisner said. “We always have exciting matches with Oakland Mills. It was our first time ever beating Middletown. La Plata and Atholton could have went either way. Our depth was tested with some starters out. The kids really stepped up and wrestled hard. We still have a lot of work to do but I am pleased with where we are at right now.”
The Point’s 42-31 win over Oakland Mills gave Whisner his 300th career win at the helm of Sparrows Point’s program.
“I think that getting 300 wins means that I am pretty old,” Whisner added. “It would not be possible without the best coaching staff in Baltimore County.”
Sparrows Point edged Atholton, 37-35. They endured another tight battle with La Plata, 45-34. The other four teams the Point faced barely challenged them as they tallied a 64-16 win over North Point, downed Easton 77-6, crushed Charles H. Flowers 78-6, and molly-whopped Calvert 69-3.
Mike Fouts, Drew Gorsuch, and Richard Davis were all 8-0 over the two days. Mike’s brother, Matt, was 4-0 before he withdrew due to injury.
