Pointers go 8-0 in an early season litmus testby Billy Loverocket
Sparrows Point has used the Scorpion Duals as a barometer for its improvement in recent years. When head coach Mike Whisner first started taking his squad to Oakland Mills they were routinely beat by La Plata, Middletown, and Oakland Mills.
The tide has changed in recent years as the Pointers started beating those squads and now for the second consecutive year, they walked away as the Scorpion Duals champs with an 8-0 record.
“This is our second one in a row,” said Whisner. “Two years ago, it was a one-day tournament and there was no true champion. The year before that St. Paul’s and Dover from Delaware were the class of the field.”
The Point’s closest match was with Montgomery County’s Montgomery Blair, 43-33. The aforementioned nemesis La Plata was defeated 44-27. Oakland Mills was also slain to the tune of a 57-19 score.
The East Baltimore County power downed Severna Park 58-19, Atholton 66-15, North Point 66-18, Calvert 72-12, and Charles H. Flowers, 78-6.
“We always take pride in winning a dual meet tournament because it shows the depth of a program,” Whisner continued. “We had several kids banged up before the tournament and a couple banged up during it, but we were still able to throw out quality wrestlers. I am very proud that we did not forfeit a single weight class all weekend.
“I thought we looked good but rusty. The way the schedule fell, we only had 11 practices before our first match. We are wrestling our way into shape. Once we get healthy and (get) the kids in their correct weight classes hopefully we can compete with the top teams like Owings Mills.”
Tyler Maynor, Richard Davis, Jake Rallo, and Lexx Carr all went 8-0.
