Archbishop Spalding got two home runs, three triples and a double from Ryan Metzler and Sean Miller, and Austin Clark held Gilman to four hits as the Cavaliers blasted the Greyhounds, 13-3, in Roland Park on Friday to remain in second place in the MIAA A Conference.
Metzler had a homer, triple, double, and two RBI, and Miller had two triples, a homer and three RBI.
The Cavs held a 2-1 lead after four innings before they erupted for five runs in the fifth, and six more in the sixth. Metzler and Miller hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth, and Miller and Phil Kreis both tripled in the sixth.
Catcher Alex Barclay had three hits, Austin Neary had a single, double and two RBI, and Derek Wells had a home run and three RBI for coach Jeff Palumbo.
Clark said he was hitting his spots and keeping the ball inside against the Greyhounds.
“It was a complete team effort, ” said the right-hander. “It was awesome.”
First-baseman Nick Freeberger, who hits clean-up in the Cav lineup said that having Metzler and Miller at the top of the order helps a lot.
“They’re a great duo; they’re always on base.” Freeberger said that Clark kept the Greyhounds off balance all day. “He hit his spots and mixed his pitches.”
Miller said he was seeing the ball well. “I felt really good today,” said slick-fielding shortstop.
John Durham had Gilman’s only extra-base hit, a two-run home run in the fifth.
The Cavs (6-2) will host Calvert Hall (7-1), on Monday. The Hall beat Mount St. Joseph, 6-2, on Friday.
