After two impressive wins last weekend, Archbishop Spalding girls’ basketball team has garnered national acclaim. The Severn school, the area’s consensus No. 1 squad, entered USA Today’s Super 25 poll at No. 25.
The Cavaliers (6-1 overall) made their case at the 5th annual Breezy Bishop Showcase at Poly-Western. After blowing a 12-point second half lead, Spalding outlasted Riverdale Baptist, then-ranked 16th nationally by USA Today, 69-58, in overtime.
The Cavaliers came back Sunday with a 73-58 victory over Bishop Ford, the No. 4 team in the New York City area. Spalding’s lone loss is a 52-46 decision to St. John’s (D.C.) at the ACH Metro Classic Mixer at Holy Cross in Montgomery County. St. John’s is ranked No.1 in the Washington area and No. 23 by USA Today.
Spalding takes on Mercy Wednesday in an IAAM A Conference contest. Friday evening, the Cavaliers host No. 2 Seton Keough.
