Archbishop Spalding High girls’ soccer team finished second at the Zionsville (IN) Invitational over the weekend. The top-ranked Cavaliers went 2-1, with its lone loss to Tennessee’s St. Agnes.
Spalding, ranked No. 3 nationally by ESPN Rise, opened with a 4-1 victory over Sylvania Northview Friday evening as senior Maggie Morrison scored three goals and Julie Hibbert added a score. Mo Ostrowski, Gracyn Bryant and Lakin Duffey contributed an assist.
Spalding goalie Jocelyn McCoy stopped 12 shots. The defending IAAM A champs came back hours later for a pair of games Saturday.
Morrison had the game-winner as the Cavaliers defeated Ohio’s Fenwick, 2-1. Bryant provided the assist on Morrison’s tally, and Kelly Patterson scored Spalding’s other goal with the assist from Duffey.
In a matchup of Top 20 nation powers, Bethany Bunker’s tally in the 74th minute was all that St. Agnes, ranked No. 16 nationally by ESPN Rise, needed against the Cavaliers. Evansville (IN) Memorial placed first in the ESPNRise pool with 2-0-1 mark (7 points) ahead of Spalding (6 points) and Guerin Catholic from Indiana.
The Cavaliers next play at McDonogh School Invitational this weekend.
