Southern Garrett pulled out a win over the John Carroll Patriots, Wednesday, 39-33, but the big stry of the night was in Mathew Miller’s 4-3 win over Southern’s outstanding wrestling, Bubba Scheffel.
Rolling a scoreless first period into a 2-2 tied second with duplicated reversals, Miller worked a reversal with just 30 seconds remaining in the third period for the 4-2 lead, and cut Scheffel away at the end of the match for the one-point win, ending Scheffel’s 89-match winning streak.
The win was John Carroll’s only win in the first eight matches, and the Patriots had to go perfect for the remainder of the match to get the team win.
After building a 39-3 lead with six matches to go, Southern Garrett just had to keep from being pinned six times to achieve the team win. Three patriots falls later, it was gavin Murphy who gold tough with John Carroll’s Dan Froehlick to a 3-1 loss, sealing the win for the Rams.
Helping build the huge lead for Southern were pinners Lex Ozias (160), Coty Rasel (189), Dale Marple (215), Kevin Miller (285), Austin Schaffer (103) and Coy Ozias (112), with a decision by Mikey Skipper to open the match.
John Carroll’s comeback started with back-to-back-to-back falls from Scott Strappelli, Lance Waters and George Weber at 119, 125 and 130, respectively, and saw another fall by TJ Centi a 140 with decisions by Froehlich (135) and Joe Vitucci (145).
The Patriots will stay busy over winter break, taking to the Boiling Springs Tournament in Pennsylvania, Dec. 29, and coming back in the new year to face McDonogh on Jan. 5.
