South Carroll High field hockey team entered the playoffs with a 6-8 regular season record, but found the wins when it mattered most.
The Cavaliers defeated southern Maryland’s Patuxent, 2-0, in the Class 1A state championship match at Washington College Saturday.
“We are so excited, we are so happy to be here,” South Carroll coach Julie Radnoff said. “This group came out a half hour early to practice all year long for this moment and they came through and we are just so excited.”
Before a throng of their fans, standing against the railing in front of the bleachers, who traveled from Carroll County, the Cavaliers (11-8) dethroned Patuxent as state champions. The Eldersburg school outscored their opponents, 23-0, in the postseason.
“It is just so surreal that we actually won states,” South Carroll senior Jenna McDermott said. “We have been working so hard towards it and it finally happened and we are all just so excited. Our defense was phenomenal today.”
After a scoreless first half, Cavaliers senior Grace Fipps found junior Julia Weiss inside the circle on a cross from the near side for the game’s first goal with just under 22 minutes remaining.
Fipps added an insurance goal with 30 seconds left on a pass from junior Rachel Linn to secure the state title.
“It feels great, we have been working all season and just to see it all come together is really just a blessing,” Fipps said.
