Through the first couple of weeks Oakland Mills High boys’ basketball squad has left little doubt it is the team to beat in the Howard County league. The No. 11 Scorpions dismantled defending county champ Hammond, 79-44.
Senior center/forward Greg Whittington scored a game-high 28 points for Oakland Mills (5-0, 4-0 Howard) and senior guard Joe Kiely added 11 points for the unbeaten Scorpions, who led 30-18 at halftime. Oakland Mills went on a 22-2 run from late in the third into early fourth to gain full command. The Scorpions have won their first four league matches by an average margin of 26 points.
Tristen Baboolal led Hammond with 10 points (2-3, 2-2 Howard). The Bears host Mount Hebron Friday evening in league action.
Oakland Mills travels to Centennial Friday before hosting Atholton and Glenelg next week.
