Panthers outlast Paul VI in OT, Bullis as West stuffs stat sheet; McDonogh and Mount St. Joseph drop two

St. Frances’ Jamal West, snagging a rebound during last December’s match with Virginia’s Paul VI, was a double-double machine Saturday at the DMV Live Tournament at DeMatha Catholic. The rising senior post finished with 31 points and 30 rebounds as the Panthers defeated Paul VI and Bullis School at the recruiting showcase in Hyattsville.

The last time St. Frances played at DeMatha Catholic, the Panthers lost to northern Virginia’s Paul VI in the Charm City Classic. Saturday, St. Frances got a little redemption, winning 70-66 in overtime over the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference stronghold on the second day of the DMV Live I tournament in Prince George’s County.

Rising senior Jamal West posted a double-double of 17 points and 19 rebounds for St. Frances, which won the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League titles last season, and Byron Ireland added 15 points and five rebounds. Reigning VSN Player of the Year and Virginia Commonwealth University commit Adrian Baldwin finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Julian Reese had 11 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

The East Baltimore school went 2-0 Saturday, adding a 54-45 decision over Montgomery County’s Good Counsel. West finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

After an opening win Friday, Mount St. Joseph fell twice Saturday. The Gaels were edged by Prince George’s County’s Bishop McNamara, 50-49. Rising junior guard Ausar Crawley had 17 points for Mount St. Joseph.

Despite 12 points and 3 assists from George Washington commit Tyler Brelsford, the Gaels dropped a 48-44 decision to Good Counsel. Jason Edokpayi finished with nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

McDonogh School remained winless, falling to Bishop Ireton from Virginia, 63-57, and Good Counsel (58-50). Rising junior Dave Brown poured in 38 points in the Ireton loss.

St. Vincent Pallotti got 19 points and eight rebounds from rising senior guard Anthony Blunt and Wade Jackson added 18 points in a 60-59 victory over Flint Hill (VA). Donald Carpenter and Warren Mouganda each finished with 14 as the Panthers fell, 72-68, to Prince George’s County’s Riverdale Baptist School.

McDonogh, Mount St. Joseph and St. Frances are back in action Sunday. The round-robin event coincides with the first weekend of summer NCAA Division I coaches are allowed to evaluate high school prospects.
