It was a great round for the Rising Sun Tigers, who leaped from fourth-place to first after a perfect run through the 1A/2A East Regional semifinals, Saturday, at Joppatowne High School in Harford County.
Rising Sun freshman Joe Jeurgens started the Tiger run through the Saturday semifinal round, upsetting No. 1 seeded Sheldon Garcia for 103-pound final appearance and will joined by three teammates in the finals.
Adam Hefflefinger (125), Robert Rakes (135) and Anthony Cimorosi (145) all won their respective semifinal bouts, and the foursome ties for the most finalists from one team.
The other foursome, coming from Parkside, helped their team bounce from fifth to second in just one round, with winners Anthony Rivera (112), Brenan McAllister (140), Zach Eure (215) and Bermante Tull (285).
It was less than flattering performance for former leader Bel Air, who dropped from first to third-place with three losses in the semifinals, pushing forward just Tony Proctor (130) and Tom Kuegler (189) to the regional finals.
Proctor’s appearance was an upset in the 130-pound weightclass, earning a win over No. 2 CH Austin of Fallston, while Kueger’s second fall of the night posted a new tournament record.
Kuegler had shared the fastest fall time in the quarterfinals, pinning in 32 seconds, but outdid himself in the semifinals with a 27-second fall, marking the fastest in the tournament.
Kent Island made drastic moves out of the regional semifinals, notching three finalists in Colton Smith (103), Shame Smith (112) and Thomas Kyle (160), helping the team move into fourth place.
Harford Tech mad its way into the top six, advancing Jamie Rappazzo (152) and Dillon Brush (171) to the finals, and marked alongside UCBAC teams Patterson Mill and Perryville for multiple regional finalists.
Patterson Mill went perfect in their two semifinal appearances, seeing No. 2 Zach Cullison pin his way to the 119-pound finals, and Jon Williams upset in the semis at 125 for a finals berth.
Perryville’s Chris Brown made his way to the 112-pound final, upsetting No. 2 seed Jeff Taylor of Bel Air, joining teammate Amos Harlan (135) as the two Panthers in the 2011 finals.
The 1A/2A East Regional Finals are scheduled to start between 6 p.m. 6:30 p.m., in the main gym at Joppatowne High School.
