Calvert Hall’s Denzil Richardson lead the Cardinals to a 74-63 win over Archbishop Spalding in Anne Arundel County on Thursday night in BCL/MIAA A Conference basketball action.
The Cavaliers led at the half, 30-29, before Richardson and his teammates exploded in the second half with 45 points. Richardson had 19 after intermission, and 11 of them came in the third quarter when the Cards took a 10-point lead.
Richardson attributed the win to hustle and defense.
“W’ere a small team, so we have to be a fast break team.”
Coach John Bauersfeld said that his team is starting to play better, after losing nine seniors to graduation.
“Our game plan coming in was to try to make them run as much as we can. They’re bigger than us, so we tried to make them get up and down the floor, said Bauersfeld. “We got some stops at the end, and it helped us through.”
Richardson said that the Cavs were very physical. “No. 44 (Chris Kemp) played hard against Connor (McVan).”
Mike Wade had 14, Julian Davis 13 and Matt Bosse 10 for the Cardinals.
Former Cardinal Gibbons star Eric Fisher led the Cavs with 17, and Greg Brown added 15. Kemp finished with 10 for coach Derrick Lewis.
The Cavs pulled to with six with six minutes to go in the final quarter before Wade, Davis, Richardson ran off eight quick points to seal the win.
