Gators finish 5th in team standings; Cape Henlopen (DE) wins team title

by Billy Loverocket

Delaware’s Cape Henlopen came into the 23rd installment of the Grapple at the Brook the clear the favorite. The Vikings are the No. 1 team in the Delaware Division 1 Rankings. They sport three wrestlers who sit atop their state rankings (Mikey Frederick (145), Dalton Deevey (220) and Lucas Ruppert (285)) and three others in the top five, No. 2 CJ Fritchman (160) with two number fours, Josh Alvarez (126) and Alex Taylor (195).

The Vikings did what was expected and ran away from host Springbrook (No. 8 in the Maryland State Wrestling Association rankings), 260.5-163. All six of those super stars won their respective weight classes.

Howard County had three representatives at the affair, Long Reach, Reservoir and Atholton. Reservoir came in fifth with 113 points. Andrew Dolezel won an overtime bout, 8-6, with Edwin Reilly (Wilson, DC).

“The tournament was really tough, and there were really good wrestlers there,” Dolezel said. “I think the third place and the runner up could have easily won this tournament the same way I did.”

Dylan Wiegert (182) and Runor Agarin (285) placed third for the Gators. Wiegert picked off No. 23 Bobby Trenkamp (Winston Churchill), 7-1, in the quarterfinals.
“It’s just good to see all the off season work I put in finally paying off,” said Wiegert of his upset win.

Sebastian Mesa (126) and Jack Goldscher (132) were fourth for Reservoir. Sam Vissers was sixth at 120.

“I’m really proud of the way all of my kids wrestled,” Reservoir coach Andrew McIntyre said. “Andrew is a freshman and has a very bright future. Dylan put in a ton of work during the missed year and the off-season, and he is really hitting his stride. Everyone is working really hard and I’m excited to see what they do as we approach the post season.”

No. 9 Ricco Goss led Atholton’s efforts with a third-place finish at 160lbs. In the bronze medal bout, Goss defeated No. 18 Ayo Tobun (Winston Churchill), 10-0. Placing fourth were Alexander Marc (220) and heavyweight Mark Enamorado. Daniel Ogordi was fifth at 170. Landing in sixth were Jonathan Maslan (106) and Cameron Burt (138).

Two Long Reach grapplers reached the awards stand, Paul Waddy (3rd at 145) and Deangelo Hobbs (6th at 160).

Springbrook crowned three champions, Ayden Smith (106), Lincoln Wendel (152), and No. 15 Eric Washington (182). Washington authored a mild upset of No. 14 Jackson Barney (Poolesville), 7-0, for his championship.

No. 9 Ansumana Badje dropped the heavyweight title bout to Cape Henlopen’s Ruppert, 1-0. No. 21 Sagbe Sieh was third at 170 for the Blue Devils. Coming in fourth was Giancarlo Reyes (195). Taking fifth were Ricky Dixon (113) and Ismaila Badje (220).

No. 17 Winston Churchill was third (149.5 points) with two champions. No. 10 Ethan Nasvaderani (120) blew Holt Baker (Cape Henlopen, No. 6 in DE) out of the water by the tune of a 16-2 major-decision. No. 5 Jaden Selby took out Delaware’s No. 2 man, Cape Henlopen’s Carson Kammerer, 10-9 for the 170lb title.

Placing second for the Bulldogs were Mike Merola (138) and No. 19 Charlie Trenkamp (195). Tobun was fourth. Taigh Merola (126), Jeremy Kwon (132), and Michael Assaf (285) placed fifth.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase’s Isaac Guttentag (No. 1 at 145) captured the 138lb crown with a first period pin of Churchill’s Mike Merola, 1:43. No. 20 Jonathan Chang (Clarksburg) posted a technical-fall over Fernando Meija Jr. (Northwest), 16-0, for the gold at 132.
