Injuries leave Gerstell unable to post for final
Poly High’s summer league basketball team, playing under the moniker of Our Family, captured the 2019 St. Paul’s Summer League championship, Friday night, taking the final by default as Gerstell Academy was forced to forfeit after coming out of its semifinal victory with only four healthy bodies.
Poly and John Carroll School shared the top seed as both teams went 6-1 in the regular season. Poly faced Dulaney in its semifinal and cruised to a 52-33 victory behind 17 points from Bryce Lindsey and 13 from Hassan Massenburg.
Gerstell down John Carroll, 45-35, in the other semi as Ahmad Harrison and Antoine Thompson combined for 22 points. The Falcons had just six players available for that game, but one had to depart and another was injured, forcing the Carroll County squad to concede the championship game.
Including its playoff victories, Poly finished the summer league at 8-1. Gerstell, which won three playoff games to reach the runner-up position, finished with an 8-3 record.
Also on Friday, the league held its annual All-Star Game, with the Blue squad routing the Gold squad, 97-59. Archbishop Curley’s Caleb Johnson poured in 23 points to lead the Blue and Pikesville’s Evan Flax finished with 17 points. Jaren Bryant of John Carroll and Cam Byers of Dulaney led the Gold squad with 10 points each.
