And the beat goes on for the Dunbar High football team.
The No. 10 Poets continued their run of dominance, posting a 60-0 decision over Southside Academy (6-5 overall) in a Class 1A South Region semifinal Friday evening at Mervo’s Modell Field. Dunbar (10-1) will play unbeaten Forest Park Saturday afternoon at Poly for the region championship and a berth in the state semifinals.
The east Baltimore school built a 44-0 halftime lead en route to its ninth straight victory and sixth consecutive shutout. The Poets haven’t allowed a touchdown in 39 quarters.
Dunbar led 20-0 at the opening quarter after touchdown runs of 12 and 80 yards by senior Epe Henriques, and a seven-yard pass from Kevin Estep to Deontay McManus. Touchdown runs by Charles Brown (nine yards) and Lavar Highsmith (37), and a 35-yard interception return by Leland Lassiter pushed the Poets advantage to 44-0.
Lassiter, a sophomore defensive back, had three interceptions with Bryan Martin and Ernest Hawkins each adding one. Hawkins and Highsmith each recorded two sacks.
Henriques rushed for 122 yards, and JaQuan Holt added 105, including a 57-yard touchdown run.
