Perry Hall boys’ soccer team traveled to Frederick County Wednesday evening looking to take another step back to the state Class 4A finals. Instead, the Gators found heartache again.
Urbana became the latest Perry Hall’s postseason nightmare, winning the North Region crown, 3-0, at Linganore. Joey Penn scored twice for the Hawks, and Will Duddleson broke a scoreless tie in the 71st minute.
The Hawks will play Prince George’s County High Point in a state semifinal Saturday at Richard Montgomery. The winner plays Severna Park or Magruder for the state title next week at UMBC.
The No. 4 Gators played the Frederick County school even, before the three-goal barrage ended their title hopes. After losing in the 2007 and 2008 title game, the Gators were upset in the region quarterfinal round last season.
Duddleson took a corner kick from Penn and got the ball past Gators freshman Austin Kroll, who flustered Duddleson and Hawks most of the evening. Penn found a gap through Perry Hall’s defense and ripped a shot past Kroll, extending Urbana’s lead to 2-0 with five minutes left in regulation before added the final nail a minute later.
Perry Hall, who won the Baltimore County championship, finished 15-3 on the season.
