No. 12 Loyola needed to a win to maintain its status in the MIAA A Conference soccer playoff picture and the Dons delivered with a 5-0 victory over visiting Archbishop Spalding, Thursday at Blakefield.
Senior Ian Peacock paced the offense with two goals, while junior Jamie Dubyoski had a goal and an assist. Elliott Andelman and Mike Distler also scored for the Dons (6-7, 5-6), while Jeremy DeGranffernreidt added two assists.
Loyola is now tied with Archbishop Curley for fifth place in the Conference, as the Dons and Friars begin a little home-and-home series. On Friday, Curley will visit Blakefield and the Dons will make the return trip to Sinclair and Erdman on Tuesday. Curley closes its regular season next Thursday at John Carroll, while Loyola will host McDonogh in its final game, also next Thursday.
The head-to-head will likely determine which team claims the fifth seed, but regardless of what happens over the final week, both Loyola and Curley have clinched places in the playoffs.
Spalding remains winless in league play at 0-11-1. The Cavs are 4-11-3 overall.
