McDonogh School’s boys’ basketball squad was denied a repeat at the Benedictine Christmas Classic as host school Benedictine College Prep claimed a 60-49 in the title game in Richmond, Va. Saturday evening.
Robert Johnson, a junior guard, scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half, and L.G. Gill added 12 points and six rebounds for unbeaten Benedictine (14-0 overall). Eagles senior swing B.J. Andrews had 16 points and Evan Fisher finished with 12.
Down 10 points at halftime, McDonogh (5-7) got to within 50-45 with under three minutes left in regulation, but Benedictine finished off the MIAA A Conference squad to win the tourney crown for the 11th time and seventh since 2001. A year ago, the Eagles overcome a 10-point second deficit and won in overtime over Benedictine for the title.
It would be different Saturday as Johnson scored 13 points in the opening quarter for the Cadets, who led 20-12. Benedictine extended it to 29-19 at halftime.
Andrews and Fisher were named to the all-tournament squad. No. 5 John Carroll, which lost in the semifinals to Benedictine Friday evening, claimed third-place with a 55-50 victory over Haverford School from Pennsylvania.
The Eagles are back in action Wednesday with a MIAA non-conference match at Gilman School. The Patriots travel to Irvington Friday for a MIAA A match with No. 2 Mount St. Joseph in a rematch of last season’s championship game.
