Another chapter was written on Friday afternoon in one of Baltimore City’s longest rivalries in high school football. Edmondson-Westside traveled cross-town to face archrival Patterson. On this sunny afternoon the Clippers were the victorious team as Patterson defeated Edmondson, 16-8.
Patterson entered the game with a 3-1 record, coming off a tough, 30-22, loss to No. 7 Poly last week. So the Clippers were hungry for a win and wanted to prove to the critics that the loss to Poly was a fluke.
As for Edmondson, also 3-1 overall, the Red Storm entered Friday’s contest coming off a 40-0 win over Digital Harbor.
The first half was very sloppy as turnovers plagued each team. The squads combined for eight turnovers going into halftime.
However, as the second quarter was winding down Patterson finally found the end zone when quarterback Aaron Overton connected with tight end Marcus Woodard for a 13 yard pass to put the Clippers up 8-0. Overton scrambled into the end zone for the two-point conversion.
The second half started with both teams turning the ball over again. Most notably, Patterson fumbling the football in the red zone after engineering a great drive down the field, which carried over into the fourth quarter.
Later in the quarter, Edmondson turned the ball over on downs and Patterson once again found the endzone, this time on a Overton 40 yard pass to junior wideout Myrek Lee-Fowlkes. Overton, once again waltzed into the endzone for the two pointer to give the home team a 16-0 lead with under six minutes left in the game.
Edmondson then recovered the kickoff and marched the ball down the field and scored to make it a 16-8 game with 2:28 left to go. Patterson couldn’t get a first down on the next series, which would have helped them run down the clock to get the win, allowing Edmondson one final chance to tie the game.
The Clippers defense came up big down the stretch, denying the Red Storm any shot at scoring.
Patterson improves to a 4-1 record and will play City on October 8. As for Edmondson, the Red Storm falls to 3-2 overall and will face Poly next Friday on the road once again.
