After dropping its first game over the weekend, Patterson High boys’ basketball team went into Monday’s matchup with City College, looking to rebound, more specifically, get a relatively balanced effort from its starters. The No. 1 Clippers got what they needed, defeating the No. 10 Knights, 69-58.

Junior guard Aquille Carr had 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Patterson (5-1 overall), and Myrek Fowkles added 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Christian Johnson and senior post Charles Tapper each pace City (3-1) with 13 points.

The defending Baltimore City Division I champ Clippers led wire-to-wire Monday to win their division opener. The Kane Street school have won 28 consecutive decisions in area play, dating back to February 2010. Patterson defeated City in last season’s Baltimore City Division I title game.

Patterson lost to New York City’s top-ranked Lincoln, 71-66, in overtime Saturday at the Towson Center. Clippers coach Harry Martin pointed to an ineffective supporting cast (15 points) to Carr and Fowkles, the only returning starters, for Saturday’s failure.

It wasn’t the case Monday. Shakir Brown, plagued with fouls Saturday despite hitting the game-tying three-pointer in regulation, finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Leonard Livingston and Nyme Manns combined for 10 points and 18 rebounds.

“I was very proud of our defensive effort in the first half…best I’ve seen in a while,” said Martin, whose team led 20-0 after the opening quarter and 37-20 at intermission.

The young Knights (0-1 Division I) managed just seven field goals in the opening half. Patterson opened its largest lead at 48-28 in the third quarter after a rebound and score by Fowkles.

“If we could have held their first quarter run, it would’ve been a better game,” said City coach Daryl Wade, whose team missed 12 free throws in addition to 14 turnovers. “We got away from our game plan and they did what they do best and ran.”

City hosts Carver Vo-Tech in Division I action Thursday afternoon. Patterson next plays Dec. 28 against Plymouth Whitemarsh (PA) at the Jameer Nelson Classic at Widener University near Philadelphia.
