It was a wild opening day in MIAA A Conference soccer as four of the five games were won by the lower ranked team, including John Carroll’s 2-1 road victory over No. 17 Archbishop Spalding.
In fact, the Patriots are the only team in the A Conference not currently in the VSN Top 20, but the Patriots made a case to change that when they emerged from a scoreless first half to down the Cavaliers.
Danny Beil and Colby Fell scored for John Carroll, which received assists from Alex Snyder and Chris Wohlfort. Alex Critzos netted Spalding’s only goal.
Only No. 6 Gilman avoided the upset as it took down No. 7 Loyola, 2-0. In other games, No. 19 Archbishop Curley edged No. 15 Calvert Hall, 1-0, and No. 3 McDonogh was impressive in a 3-0 win over No. 1 Mount St. Joseph.
