Panthers blank West Toronto Prep


The St. Vincent Pallotti football team, expected to be a title contender in the MIAA B Conference this fall, opened its 2019 season, Friday night, north of the border and came home with a 20-0 victory over West Toronto Prep.

Mekhi McDaniels rushed for two touchdowns for the Panthers in the contest, including a 1-yard run in the opening quarter and an 8-yard surge in the second quarter, as Pallotti opened up an 18-0 halftime lead. The Panthers other touchdown came Connor Maloney blocked a field goal attempt, in the second quarter, scooped the ball and returned it 77-yards for the score.

The Panthers capped the scoring in the fourth quarter when Braxton Harsley sacked West Toronto’s quarterback in the end zone for a safety. Harsley finished with four tackles and one batted pass, in addition to the sack and safety.

McDaniels finished with 29 yards on 13 rushing attempts and caught a pair of passes. Emani Alford led the team with 107 rushing yards, on 13 carries, and he had one reception.

Defensively, Marquise Alllsup had an interception which he returned 44 yards, Cornell Evans added six tackles and a sack and Chris Boti had five tackles.

Pallotti began its journey last Tuesday with a bus ride to Buffalo, NY where the Panthers practiced on Wednesday morning at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. The team then spent some time touring the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, before settling in Mississauga, Ontario, 15 miles south of Toronto.
